Artist Statement

I am a writer and digital artist who focuses on mental health and themes of the supernatural. As someone who personally struggles with mental illness, and having watched many of my friend's experience struggles with this, I want to tell stories that are open about the topic and express them in a way I think will be clear and engaging to everyone. Which, for me, is using elements beyond what one would naturally see to truly represent and express complex emotions.

Who is JasmynAtion?

My current mediums are digital art, writing, and animation. I love drawing expressive characters, character design, and storytelling through expression, and posing. Similarly, in my writing, I focus on the individual character development to tell stories. Animation is a newer medium that I am still learning, which combines my writing and digital art skills, creating more flow, and helping visualize the feelings that words can only express figuratively, then likely not taken seriously or listened to. The power of a moving image can express emotions more thoroughly than statements like "they were depressed".

The supernatural elements are both me having fun playing with how a fictional reality functions and a means to express feelings I only know how to explain in a surreal sense. Instead of just having a monologue of someone’s internal dialogue telling a story, I have two beings that embody a conflict within them and those two beings discuss, or even argue, over what is happening in someone’s life. This specific idea comes directly from how as a teenager I worked through my own conflicts; I always felt divided on everything, so the internal split of those two conflicting sides of myself became something I just had to integrate into a story one day.

This ends up being a common method for anything I create, inspired directly from how I interpret, experience, or maybe even wish upon reality.
