I will be creating a short animation, from storyboarding, audio, music, script to art. The ‘animation’ may turn out more like an animatic; as in not necessarily all smooth animation, but indicating movement and a flowing story. This is due to time constraints and workload, but also my own style and abilities in animation leave me preferring animatics. The short will follow the story of the internal disconnect between a young woman’s conflicting parts of herself, focusing on the mental dialogue of two divided sides of her mind.

During my time at Dawson, I have taken Script Writing for Media, Digital Art, and Animation classes, all of which have helped me hone the skills this project will require of me. This is also the type of work I would love to continue pursuing even when I have completed school. Olivia Eakins is my original character, who I have used in a class project in the past and was inspired by a game I made in a Game Design class. She is part of a work-in-progress project of mine I call “Who’s Done” or “The Who’s Done Project” which is centered around the mental health of a group of friends and focuses initially on Olivia. All the characters are based on real people I know, Olivia is based on myself, in order for me to best create authentic characters with real struggles.

I have taken the opportunity in my Integrating Activity class to bring this story to light, which I felt fit the class theme of Connection since Olivia’s character struggles a lot with connecting to herself, always feeling divided and confused about why she can not be like others and just accept things as they are. So, not only a disconnection with herself but a disconnection with others and even the reality of society. The short animation will only scrape the surface of this, but her internal disconnect should be fairly obvious enough to fit the theme of the class.

Procedure

Having done projects like this before I know first and foremost you need to complete the Script, then record the Script Dialogue. Doing this as soon as possible gives me an idea of how long the Short will be before diving into any music or animating. For a Short Animatic/Animation like this, and how I storyboard, it should not take me long with the help of the script to complete a rough storyboard that’ll help me proceed with the Short. Then, the longest part really, drawing the frames. By this point I should have a good idea of how much time and detail I can put into the frames and dive into the meat of the project. This will be the longest portion, especially since how I typically work is going back and forth from the video editing software and the art program to make sure frames work; in other words, every few frames I am also editing and stitching the video together. I want to aim to complete the project by May 9, giving myself some room for any potential technical or personal difficulties before the GALA.
